Skateboarding is the act of rolling on or performing tricks with a skateboard.

Also known as: Rullebrett [norwegian] / Rullalauta [finnish] / Patineta [spanish]


Skateboards are used as a method of transportation, as a hobby or a sport, and because of the creative aspect some also consider it an art form.

A skatespot is basicly any spot good for skating. This includes both obstacles constructed for skateboarding, such as the ones found in skateparks, and natural occuring spots such as curbs, ledges, stairs, gaps etc.

Skateboarding tricks can be performed on flatground, obstacles and elements made for skateboarding, and involve things such as; varials, jumps, flips, grabs, slides, grinds and stalls and spins.

A complete skateboard consists of a skateboard deck, skateboard trucks, skateboard wheels and various nuts and bolts.

Safety equipment used for skateboarding includes; helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist gards and glowes.

The sport has been shaped and influenced by hundreds of skateboarders throughout the years. Skateboarding originated as "sidewalk surfing" in the American state of California in the 1950s. A key skateboarding trick, the ollie, was only developed in the late 1970s.

Extreme Sports:

Skateboarding is often portrayed in the media as an extreme sport, although this is criticized by some skaters.


The only country ever to ban skateboards was Norway, where the use, ownership and sale of skateboards were forbidden in the period between 1978 and 1989. The ban was said to be due to the perceived high amount of injuries caused by boards.

Skateboarding is however banned in many public spaces all over the world.
